"I gotta believe that I did everything I could to save him. To get him back safe, to not let him down. I gotta believe that I did everything humanly possible. Because if I can’t believe that, and these other possibilities that you talk about, that Mulder talks about, that Agent Scully talks about, if they’re real? If they’re real then…that’s something else I could have done to save my son."
Kira’s Top 10 Favourite TV Characters
#5 - John Doggett (Robert Patrick), The X Files
C’mon, the scent of patriotism is so strong it’s making Captain America’s head spin. John Doggett is a die-hard skeptic looking for the rational explanation in every irrational thing he sees, but he’s not an idiot - he only asks that all logical avenues be exhausted before people start jumping at tales of ghosts and aliens. He’s a pure meat-and-potatoes Everyman, and he’s got the sense and the investigative skills to get the job done - and done well - even if he doesn’t buy the paranormal bit.
First Meeting -
8.01 ‘Within’. Yeah, I know, that’s a long way to wait in a show before the best character comes along, but it’s not like it’s dull waiting. The show was just starting to get stale, when up popped John Doggett to save the day and add some much-needed spice to a tired formula.
When did I first fall in love?
By the time D-man was cradling a sobbing Scully at the tail end of his second episode, I had forsaken all other characters to dedicate myself to him.
Best Relationships -
I’ll always consider the time Scully and Doggett spent as partners to be the golden days of The X Files.
Best episodes for Doggetty goodness -
John Doe wins the solid gold Kewpie Doll, that’s for sure. Invocation, Via Negativa, Empedocles, Audrey Pauley, and Release round out a top three for either season.
Closest Character Competition -
I can never quite decide on my second favourite X Files character, I had so many Number Ones before Doggett entered the picture, it’s a constant battle. The Cigarette Smoking Man, perhaps. Or Scully. Or Alex Krycek. Hell, maybe Jeffrey Spender. At any rate, Doggett’s in no real danger of losing his title.
